Cisco Unified Communication Manager

Cisco Unified Communications (CUCM) is the call-processing component of the Cisco Unified Communications System. It is an IP-based communications system integrating voice, video, data, and mobility products and applications. It enables more effective, secure communications and can transform the way in which we communicate.

VSM and CUCM System health

VSM collects and stores configuration, capacity and availability information relating to the consumption of all essential CUCM resources. This data is mined at all levels, from infrastructure through to the CUCM application layers. It stores this information for reporting, trending and analytical purposes. VSM specifically targets critical areas in CUCM that indicate business-impacting issues.

If any changes are made to the architecture, the dashboard will automatically reconfigure itself to measure and display critical capacity data based on the current configuration.

Items monitored include not only server processor, but also essential aspects of the configuration which have their own specific requirements and capacity limitations. This information is presented by way of dashboards within Service Desk. The purpose of the dashboards is three-fold:

  • To enable IT teams to proactively identify potential issues and prevent outages.
  • To provide a real time view of overall CUCM health at a glance without having to rely on end-users reporting problems.
  • In the event of a service-impacting incident to significantly reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and therefore to reduce the impact on business operations by quickly identifying the root cause.

General System Health

  • Processor
  • Memory
  • Uptime

If memory or CPU exceed 80% this is shown in amber and an alarm is raised.

Network Connectivity

Network connectivity shows the response time based on a ping requests sent to the equipment.  Failed ping tests will result in an alarm being raised. Criteria defining ping failure is flexible, and is set in Network Connectivity configuration settings

Network Interface

Network Interface shows transmitted and received bytes on the eth0 interface.

Database Summary

Database summary shows the replication count and status between IM Presence servers within the cluster.

Alerts will be highlighted as red and amber based on the impact:

Red - If the replication status is (Number of replicates is incorrect , Bad Replication , Setup Failed)

Amber - If the replication status is initializing

Call Rate

Call Rate shows the following

  • Number of (Active & Attempted and Completed) Voice Calls on UCM Server
  • Number of (Active & Attempted and Completed) Video  Calls on UCM Server

SIP Calls

VSM monitors SIP trunks configured in the system.

CUCM SIP Calls Dashlet shows the following:

  • SIP Trunks configured in CUCM Server
  • Number of (Active & Attempted and Completed ) Voice Calls on each trunk
  • Number of (Active and Completed) Video Calls on each trunk
