VMware Infrastructure Overview

VMware Infrastructure consists of both hardware and software components. The following are considered to be the main components of VMware infrastructure:

  • vCenter Server Appliance
  • Data Center
  • Hosts
  • Virtual Machines

How to add equipment into VSM is here or contact your Business Partner for assistance.

VSM and VMware System Health

VSM collects and stores configuration, capacity and availability information relating to VMware Infrastructure. (vCenter, ESXI Hosts and Virtual machines). It stores this information for reporting, trending and analytical purposes.

If any changes are made, the dashboard will automatically reconfigure itself to measure and display critical capacity data based on the current configuration, without the need for human intervention.

The purpose of the dashboards is three-fold:

  • To enable IT teams to proactively identify potential issues and prevent outages.
  • To provide a real time view of overall VMware Environment  health at a glance without having to rely on end-users reporting problems.
  • In the event of a service-impacting incident to significantly reduce the Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and therefore to reduce the impact on business operations by quickly identifying the root cause.

vCenter System Information

The vCenter Server is the centralized management utility for VMware, and is used to manage virtual machines, multiple ESXi hosts, and all dependent components from a single centralized location.

VSM connects to vCenter and displays information related to that instance of vCenter. This includes the total number of virtual machines and ESXi hosts.

ESXi Hosts

ESXi is the hypervisor on which virtual machines run as a set of configuration and disk files that together perform all the functions of a physical machine.

VSM displays information about ESXi. This includes;

  • Data Center
  • ESXi Version
  • Connection status
  • Number of managed virtual machines per host.

By using a mouse-over, you can display information about specific host.

Virtual Machines (VMs)

VSM monitors virtual machines and displays information about each VM including;

  • managing ESXi host,
  • Data Center,
  • OS,
  • IP address
  • power status - a summary pane shows ON, OFF and SUSPENDED (7/3/0)

Customize Virtual Machines Health Summary View

Two views are available  for VMware system health summary ,toggling between two views using small and large icons
