Introduction

Depicts the loading on the processor at the Operating System level, so that it takes into account the true loading including all applications.

Useful for identifying processor hardware capacity constraints. Can be used in conjunction with Availability Management to notify IT support staff of an impending capacity issue, and can be instrumental in preventing large outages.

Uses

Tracks actual occupancy over a given period:

  • Broken down to User, System and IO wait.
  • Data is cumulative, so the total processor occupancy is readily seen.
  • Trend over time period for forecasting hardware upgrade.

Processor capacity in excess of 70% in a Linux Operating System environment is not recommended and will have a detrimental effect on the performance of the application.

Example

The Processor at the top is running well within manufacturer recommendations. The processor at the bottom is hitting 100% occupancy and should be upgraded to more powerful hardware.
